1975 RLS Hmwk due F 9/2

1. Quiz Friday on Suffixes and Prefixes in Mosaic I (pgs. 9, 22 and 23) and on the suffix -less. The quiz will start at 3:30pm.

2. Complete the TOEFL iBT Test in Mosaic I on pages 25-26.

3. In Real Talk 2 on page 6, use 4 of the vocabulary review terms in your own original dialogue. I will collect these.

Buy your books before Friday if you don't already have them! Otherwise, make copies (borrow from a classmate and copy Ch. 1 in both books.)

1984 WR Hmwk for F 9/2

1. AW page 13 Ex. 2 and 3

2. Edit your paragraph about a classmate (from Monday's interview). Focus on correcting capitalization errors, subject-verb agreement errors and verb tense errors.

3. Study for Verb Tense quiz on Friday. (We will play a review game before the quiz. Ask questions then.) Study your handouts/packets about verb tenses.

*Continue reading Ch. 1 in Of Mice and Men. You need to have read at least half of Ch. 1 by Friday.

Buy your books before Friday if you don't already have them! Otherwise, make copies (borrow the Academic Writing book from a classmate and copy Ch. 1.)

1. Complete the Before You Read, Reading and After You Read Exs. in MI pages 16-22). Stop before Strategy. Record your answers on separate paper.

2. Write a one page minimum response to the turning point question. Follow proper formatting.

3. Watch the news for 10 minutes.

1984 WR Hmwk for W 8/31

1. Write a 150-200 word paragraph (the front of one page, double-spaced) that introduces the classmate you interviewed in class. Focus on writing complete sentences and using the correct verb tense. Include answers to some of the following questions in your composition.
What is your name?
Where were you born?
Tell me a little bit about your family.
What languages do you speak?
Where did you go to school?
What were your favorite/least favorite subjects in school?
Tell about jobs that you have had in the past or have now.
Why are you learning English?
What is your goal or your dream?
Do you have any special talents?
Do you have any hobbies?
What do you do in your free time?

2. Complete Exercise 2 in your Tense Overview handout (about verbs).

3. Continue reading Of Mice and Men Ch. 1. We will do an activity with this on Friday. Make sure you have read at least half of the chapter by then. (Finish Ch. 1 by Sept. 7)

2. Write about your first impression of the United States. (Journal entry, 1 page, double spaced, minimum length) Be sure to detail your experience. We will share some of these in class.

3. Watch the news for 10 min.

2. Rewrite the sentences using descriptive words (Handout: Replace Vague Vocab)

3. Start Ch. 1 in OMAM (Of Mice and Men). If you don't have this book, you can buy it at many bookstores or check it out at your local library.

For Monday's class, you will need your Writing book and the novel. You will not need your Grammar book.

1. Read a front page article from the Washington Post, New York Times or Express (metro paper). Print it out or bring in the hard copy to class on Friday and be ready to discuss and summarize it in class.

2. Answer the following questions on paper:
a. Of reading, listening and speaking, which skill are you most comfortable with? Why?
b. Of reading, listening and speaking, which skill are you least comfortable with? Why?
c. How do you practice these skills outside of the classroom in the real world?

3. Buy your books.

Be on time to class. Today I kept you a little late. Normally, class will end a few minutes early.

1. Write about something you enjoy doing. Be sure to include details and explain why you like it. (Minimum of 7 sentences, double-spaced, hand-written - follow the Format Guidelines handout you received today)

b. What do you already know about writing a good paragraph in English? Use terms you know.

1973RLS Hmwk for W 8/10

Study for your Final Exam tomorrow.

Included: All chapters we have studied since the MT - Rding Ch. 4 & 8 and L/S Ch. 8 & 10. Also review any other handouts we have used - including comparative and superlative forms, idioms, pronunciation handouts, etc.

Format:
Part 1: Reading and Summary
Part 2: Vocab (see words we reviewed yesterday - the list is on the blog)
Part 3: Listening comprehension questions (like on the midterm)

1 - Find and bring in a comic from Sunday's Washington Post or other source (newspaper or online website). Print/bring the comic strip to class and be ready to discuss what you think it means and why you think it is or isn't funny. Consider: Does it include sarcasm or irony?

2 - Start your review for the final exam (on Wednesday). It will cover whatever we have discussed since the midterm.

1973 RLS Hmwk for FRI 8/5 Part 2

First, see Part 1 below about the 15 vocab words you need to define and use in a sentence.

Second, write a paragraph that uses comparative adjective forms and examples that support the comparisons. Your paragraph can be about 2 people or 2 cultures and the differences between them in terms of people's personalities and dress or cultural traditions and superstitions. Your paragraph should be at least 7 sentences.

Third, study for your Entertainment and Media Reading Test. Tomorrow we will take the test.

1. If you didn't do your Celebrations presentation PPT today, it is due tomorrow and needs to show that you spent time and followed directions if you want a good grade.

1973 RLS Hmwk for TU 8/2

1. Do Ex. 1 on page 174-175 in reading book.
2. Start research on Ceremonies around the World handout. You will do a PPT presentation on this on Wednesday. First, complete the handout for tomorrow. You need to interview at least 1 classmate and do research on the internet in English on at least 1 additional culture not in our classroom. Also include information on how your country/culture performs this ceremony.

*Our Spelling Bee will be tomorrow.
