1984 WR C/C Paragraph Model (AW Ch 7)

The Differences Between Lennie and George

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

ESL 51 Hmwk due WED 6/22

1. Spend about two hours creating the first draft of your Revised Argument Essay choosing from one of the three topics below:

1. A new trend among high school graduates around the world is the “gap year.” A gap year is a break between graduating from high school and entering a college or university. Students use the gap year to work, travel, volunteer, or do some interesting combination of those. What is your opinion of this practice? Is it a good idea to take a gap year, or is it better to go straight into a college or university?

2. As you know, a typical salary in the service sector might be between minimum wage ($7.25 an hour) and $10.00 an hour. An exception to this is waiters. Waiters are often paid between $2 and $3 an hour, with the assumption that tips will bring their salary up to a higher level. What is your opinion of the practice of making waiters rely on tips? Are there reasons to keep the current system, or are there better reasons for paying waiters minimum wage or more?

3. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
“Face-to-face communication is always better than the alternatives.”

Note: We discussed how to begin these today, by first identifying the arguments being disputed and creating a question for each to use as the first sentence of your introductory paragraph. Then we also brainstormed vocabulary and possible pros and cons of each. Refer back to the marked up copy of the model "What (Not) to Wear" for features you want to include in your Argument Essay. Page 85 in your gray packet can also help you organize your ideas. We will work on self-editing this first draft tomorrow in class, but print out your first attempt BEFORE class starts at 5:30pm.

Also continue working on Focus on Language.

ESL 51 Hmwk for M 6/20

1. Look in Course Documents and open the sample essay on school uniforms. Read the explanation that I posted, too. (on BB)

2. You have to read two articles and fill out a sheet for homework. . It is attached on BB. Read two argument essays in At A Glance. The first is "Let Granny Drive If She Can," on page 65. The second is "Guys Should Drive Till 25," on page 68. You will look for reasons and counterarguments.

3. Write your dorm essay, using the topic sentences that we wrote on the board. You can change the grammar, but use the ideas we brainstormed. You can bring that on Monday on a flash drive or in your email and work on it a little in the lab.

1984WR Hmwk due F 6/17

Use the pre-writing technique called Clustering (see p. 72-73 in AW) to prepare for tomorrow's in-class graded descriptive writing assignment. Once you have picked your topic from the list on pg. 73, decide how it makes you feel. You will base your description on supporting/explaining this feeling.(Note: You can't write about your bedroom because we already did this.) Be sure to plan ahead to choose vocabulary you will need to describe this feeling and the location of things in this place. What sensory language will you need? Look these words up in a dictionary. Learn them. You cannot use a dictionary tomorrow and I will not tell you the meaning of words. Plan tonight so that you already know what words describe how you feel in that place, what things look like, how they smell, sound, taste, and feel. You don't need to include vocabulary that describe all five senses but at least 2 or 3 of them. The more you can include, the more descriptive your paragraph will be. Be on time tomorrow. We will do this first in class.

Is it a good idea to reward children for doing school work? Why or why not?)

Possible transition/thesis

In my opinion, rewarding children with incentives is a good idea. There are several advantages to implementing this reward system.

Possible BP 1 TS

One of the benefits of reward programs is that they appeal to students’ immediate needs and wants, in this case cash and prizes for hard work. (...support sentences, conclusion)

Possible BP 2 TS

In addition to meeting students at their level and providing them with what they want as an incentive, reward programs are also beneficial because they mirror the environment in the workplace.
