Part 1:
a - Correct for Connecting AND, BUT, or OR. Add or remove commas to your writing.
b - Correct for Subject and Verb presence. Make sure each sentence has a S and V.
c - Correct for Subject and Verb agreement. Make sure S/V are both singular or plural as needed.
*See FEG 8-1 and 8-2 p. 226 and 228 and AW p.11-12 for reminders on grammar.
Part 2:
Choose 5 sentences from your writing Introducing Myself/A Classmate .
Underline the subject once and the verb twice.

ESLA 1984 Writing:

Use your Academic Writing book.

Write a paragraph 150 to 200 Words introducing yourself (p. 6 Try It Out!) OR a classmate (p.9 Try It Out!). Use the model paragraph "Introducing Myself" as a guide. Make sure your paragraph is in the correct format and follows Capitalization rules. You will turn this assignment in to me on Monday.

Questions to include in your answer:
1 - What is your name?
2 - Where were you born?
3 - Tell me a little bit about your family.
4 - What languages do you speak?
5 - Where did you go to school?
6 - What were your favorite subjects in school? Your least favorite?

Homework for Monday, August 9th

Study for your Reading, Novel and Speaking Exams.

For Reading:
1- Know about topic sentences/main ideas, support sentences and conclusions. Be able to identify them in a passage and answer related questions. Be able to write a paragraph of your own about topics from Ch. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 10 using topic sentences, support sentences and conclusions.
2 - Know at least 10 strategies that help with reading and speaking.

For WD Novel:
1 - Know about characters in the story.
2 - Be able to give your opinion about people and events in the story.
3 - Be able to identify details if the page with examples is provided.
4 - Be able to summarize the story/answer the question: What is the story about?
5 - Know about the different kind of relationships people have in the story.

For Speaking:
Practice pronunciation if you need it.
Practice complete sentences (subject and verb).

Good luck - bring questions on Monday if you have them.

Homework for Friday, August 6th

Reading:
Packaging - the material we use to put products in - hurts the environment. Many of these materials, such as plastic, contain chemicals that pollute water and soil (dirt) and are harmful to people and animals. In addition, to make packaging from paper, cardboard and wood, people must cut down trees. Fewer trees can lead to climate change and other serious environmental problems. ___________________________

a. Identify the Topic Sentence (main idea).
b. List (in your own words) the support for the main idea.
c. Write a conclusion.

Novel: Create a timeline that shows the important events that happen in the book.
Use sentences to label the timeline in order from beginning to end.

Study for Monday's finals! If you have questions, bring them tomorrow!

Reading: Cumulative Quiz - Vocabulary (Ch. 1, 3, 4-5, 10)

Novel: Choice:
1 - Dear Diary:
Choose a character from the book.
Pretend you are that character.
Write a diary entry about an event in the story.
Describe what you thought and how you felt during that time.

2 - Cartoon Summary:
Fold your paper into four sections to make boxes for a cartoon strip.
In each section, illustrate a main event in the story.
Be sure to number the events in order.
Add a sentence below each picture to describe the scene.

L/S: Group Presentations: Student Socializing Guide (see handout)
You are NOVA's Student Welcoming Committee:
Act out, give equal speaking time to each student, 2 minutes or more/student
Have questions ready for the audience to check comprehension
